* 20세기 초반에는 선교 활동하기 위해 많은 서양인이 한국으로 들어왔다. 이 서양인들은 기독교뿐만 아니라 근대 의료, 교육, 기술 등도 같이 가지고 왔다. 당시 한국인 여성들의 인권이 비교적 부족했을 반면에 바다를 건너 멀리 외국으로 온 많은 서양 여성들이 있었다. 이 여성들은 교육자, 의료인 등으로 활동하면서 한국인 여성들에 대한 관심을 특별히 가졌다. 이 서양인 여성들이 낯선 땅에서 아이도 낳고 가족을 키우고 아쉽게 병 등으로 돌아가시기도 했다.

*[[광주]]의 경우에는 많은 서양 선교사가 [[양림역사문화마을|양림동]]에서 머물게 되면서 그들의 동네를 형성하게 된다. 대부분은 [[미국남장로교|미국 남장로교회]] 출신으로 그 여성들이 교육자로서, 의료인으로서, 선교사로서 광주의 근대 문화와 사회에 많은 기여를 했다. 그런데 한편 그들의 삶 속에서 많은 이야기가 있다. 특히 [[양림동_선교사_묘역]]에서 잠든 서양인 선교사를 24명 중에 보면 15명은 여자이다. 유명한 [[서서평]], [[엄언라]] 선생님도 계시는 뿐만 아니라 1살에 세상이 일찍 떠난 [[크레인_엘리자베스|엘리자베스 크레인(Elizabeth Crane, 1917년~1918년)]]과 [[니스벳_엘리자베스_딜윈|엘리자베스 니스벳(Elisabeth Nisbet, 1922년~1923년)]]도 함계 계신다. 이렇게 죽기 전까지 귀국을 못 했거나 삶이 너무 짧아서 한국밖에 모르던 여성들도 있었다.

*또 다른 예시로 광주에서 많이 활동한 [[배유지]] 선교사 가족의 여성들의 경우를 살펴보면 첫째 부인 [[배로티|배로티(Lottie, 1867년~1901년)]] 여사는 배유진과 1894년에 결혼한 지 1년도 안 지났을 때 내한하여 선교 활동을 시작했으며 서울에서 1869년에 아들 헨리, 1899년에 딸을 샬롯을 낳고 목포로 이주한 후 1901년에 심장마비로 34세에 세상을 일찍이 떠났다. 배유진이 1904년에 불째 부인 [[벨_마가렛|마가렛(Margaret Whitaker Bell, 1873~1919)]] 여사와 결혼한 후 같은 해에 [[광주]]로 이주하게 된다. [[벨_마가렛|마가렛]]은 1906년, 1911년, 1914년에 아들 3명을 나았는데, 1911년에 태어난 아들은 돌 지나기 전에 죽었다. 그리고 [[벨_마가렛|마가렛 여사]]가 1919년에 46살에 교통사고로 돌아가신다. [[배유진]]이 또 1921년에 [[벨_줄리아|줄리아(Julia, 1872년~1952년)]]과 재혼하였는데 [[배유진]]이 1925년에 [[광주 양림동 자택]]에서 병으로 돌아가셨다. [[벨_줄리아|줄리아 여사]]가 1940년까지 한국에서 머물었는데 [[일제]]의 암력으로 귀국한 후 [[미국]]에서 1952년에 돌아가셨다. [[배유지]]의 유일한 딸 [[인사례|샬롯]]은 [[윌리엄린튼|인돈(William Linton)]]과 결혼하여 유명한 [[인씨(Linton) 선교사 가족]]의 조상이 되어 1964년까지 한국에서 살았다. 이렇게 [[배유진]]과 관련한 여성들의 삶을 보면서 선교사들이 한국에서 살면서 가족을 만들기도 하고 잃기도 했다.
